What do we do in light of the Supreme Court decision requiring states to accept a same-sex “marriage”?

We as followers of Jesus have a dual citizenship. Our greatest loyalty is to God and to our citizenship “in heaven.” (Philippians 3:20) In the world we find ourselves like everyone else, as citizens of a country here. At the same time, we are “ambassadors for Christ” in this world. (2 Cor. 5:20) As citizens of heaven and ambassadors, this means continuing to speak and affirm the truth of God’s Word no matter how dark the world gets around us. In fact, we understand the darker the world may get the brighter the light will shine. God has allowed these five judges on the Supreme Court to bring more darkness into an already dark world. In a way, they are pawns without understanding.

We as believers in Jesus are always saddened when sin gets more and more of a grip on anyone, or any country. We are saddened partly because we know the end game for those outside of Christ. However, we know God plans to use this to give his people an opportunity to shine brighter. And for this reason, we desire to speak and affirm the truth with godly care and concern. We do not go around grumbling and complaining because it has become more uncomfortable for us to live in a sinful world. To be sure, we are certainly tempted to this wrong behavior, and may temporarily find ourselves doing this out of a lack of faith and focus. We need to help each other focus on what God is doing and what our part is, which is to trust him and reflect his glory and character in all our words and actions. In this way he will shine through us.

The early church was born in a time that was probably quite a bit more ungodly than our current times. God’s Word to them is just as clear for us today:

Philippians 2:14 “Do all things without grumbling or disputing, 15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,”

Let’s not let the darkness around us draw us into grumbling, a lack of patience, hatred of those caught in sin, hopelessness, or anything else that is opposed to our mission as ambassadors and citizens of heaven. Let’s puzzle everyone around us with our confidence in God, our response of care and concern for those caught in the sinful aspects of our culture, and our eternal perspective of faith, hope, and love. God will use all this to work in hearts and bring people to faith until he comes.
