How do you measure God’s love for you?

For many years of my Christian walk with God, I measured His love for me only by the love demonstrated in God the Son’s willingness to take the punishment I deserved upon Himself and God the Father’s willingness to give his son for me:

John 3:16-17, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.  For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.”

However in recent years after reading the classic book by J. I. Packer, Knowing God, I came to realize that there is a degree more in measuring God’s love for me.  God could have just redeemed me from my sin in love, but his love is even more profound and deep.  He adopted me into his family. I became his child and He became my Father:

1 John 3:1-3, ” See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.  Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.  And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure. “
